Even a half bar too little pressure in tyres increases fuel consumption by up to 5%. Too little pressure also reduces the life of the tyre as well as safety in braking. So pay attention to your tyre pressure. You can usually find the correct values for your vehicle on the inside of the fuel tank filler flap or on the narrow side of the driver’s door below the lock. You should always check the tyre pressure when cold, so not if the car has been travelling on the motorway for two hours or has been standing with one side in the sun.
For winter tyres you should follow the advice of ADAC and ensure that the tread depth is still at least 4 millimetres. The legal requirement is generally at least 1.6 millimetres. In the wet the grip of a tyre, especially a wide tyre, decreases significantly, even at a tread depth of 4 mm. The tyres can no longer displace the film of water, and they lose contact with the road and steering and braking of the vehicle is lost. That is why it is important not to let tyres wear to the minimum legal tread depth of 1.6 mm. Replace summer tyres at the latest when the remaining tread depth reaches 2 to 2.5 mm depending on the width and winter tyres as soon as they reach 4 mm.
